Sjögren’s syndrome blood testing

For this test, we will search for certain blood protein antibodies in your blood to identify Sjögren’s syndrome. Sjögren’s syndrome is characterised by inflammation, which is frequently observed in the salivary glands and lips.

What is Sjögren’s syndrome?

Sjögren’s syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease that decreases eye and mouth excretions. The disease was first discovered by Swedish ophthalmologist Henrik Sjögren, who this condition was named after. Although xerostomia (a dry feeling in the mouth) and dry eyes are the main symptoms, it should be mentioned that the majority of persons who have these symptoms most likely do not have Sjögren’s syndrome.

There are two types of Sjögren’s syndrome:

  • If there is no underlying underlying illness, primary Sjögren’s syndrome will develop.
  • With pre-existing autoimmune conditions such as lupus, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, secondary Sjögren’s syndrome may manifest.

Symptoms of Sjogren’s Syndrome

The symptoms of Sjogren’s disease vary. While some people have all the symptoms, others may only show one or two. Nonetheless, the most common symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Dry, chalky, or cottony mouth.
  • Having a dry cough and feeling out of breath
  • Burning, dry and itchy lips, throat, or eyes that may feel grainy
  • Nose dryness
  • Changes in smell or taste
  • Skin rash and enlarged glands in the face or neck
  • Sensitivity to UV radiation
  • Numbness and tingling in different body parts
  • Absence of focus or memory
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling
  • A burning sensation in the chest or stomach called heartburn

Your healthcare provider may order Sjögren’s blood tests if:

  • Some antibodies commonly associated with Sjogren’s syndrome are present.
  • You have inflammatory conditions.
  • There are issues with the liver and kidneys.

How does Sjögren’s syndrome get diagnosed?

If you have symptoms of this condition, your medical practitioner will carry out further tests to confirm the diagnosis.

The following blood tests may be conducted to detect the presence of certain antibodies in the blood.

  • Anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) identification
  • Antibody detection for Sjögren’s syndrome (anti-SSA, commonly known as anti-Ro)
  • Identification of Anti-Sjögren’s syndrome type B (anti-SSB, commonly known as anti-La).
  • Rheumatoid factor, an antibody present in rheumatoid arthritis patients, can also be detected by blood tests.

Your medical practitioner may also carry out other tests and examinations, including:

Biopsy: Cells or tissue may be taken from a salivary gland or inside your lip and sent to a laboratory.

Eye exam: Your tear production will be measured by an ophthalmologist.

Imaging: Sialometry tracks the dye injected into the salivary glands using X-rays to determine the amount of saliva produced.

Salivary scintigraphy: This measures the duration of a radioactive isotope’s journey from a location in your vein to your salivary gland.
