Vitamin Profile Blood Test

Good nutrition is the key to good health. It is essential to check if your body is getting adequate quantities of vitamins and minerals as proper nutrition is integral to the effective functioning of your body.

A vitamin profile blood test looks for deficiency of certain vitamins and minerals in your blood. Lack of essential vitamins and minerals can severely impact your health and lead to serious problems. At Private Blood Tests London, we bring you vitamin profile tests which help determine if your body functions are going on well.

Why do you require vitamin profile test

Why do you require vitamin profile test?

Vitamins and minerals are essential for the proper functioning of our body. Deficiency in these nutrients can affect energy, immunity, and general health. For example, a deficiency in iron, folate, or vitamin B12 can lead to anaemia, resulting in tiredness, low energy, or breathlessness.

Insufficient vitamin D may result in bone pain or muscle aches. The vitamins and minerals blood test were developed by healthcare professionals to detect nutrient deficiencies and provide clear steps for improving health. It helps reduce the risk of future serious health issues by addressing these deficiencies early.

A deficiency in certain vitamins and iron can significantly impact your health. Symptoms may include loss of appetite or taste, cold intolerance, dandruff, hair loss, redness around the nose or eyes, yellowing skin, brittle or flaking nails, and muscle wasting. You might also feel tired or generally unwell, unsure of the cause. Identifying and addressing these deficiencies is the key to improving your health and overall wellbeing.

What conditions does vitamin D commonly check for

What conditions does vitamin D commonly check for?

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a vital nutrient which regulates the absorption of calcium and magnesium from the gastrointestinal tract. It plays a key role in promoting bone growth and maintaining healthy bones. Vitamin D can be obtained from dietary sources, supplements, or produced by the skin when exposed to sunlight. A deficiency in vitamin D can lead to weakened bones and other health issues. Vitamin D tests are used to identify deficiencies and track conditions that affect fat absorption, such as Crohn’s disease, ensuring timely diagnosis and management of related health concerns.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is a vital nutrient that supports the formation of red blood cells, tissue and cellular repair, and the maintenance of nerve health. Naturally occurring in animal products like milk, eggs, or poultry, it is important for individuals following plant based diets to ensure they get enough of the vitamin. A deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to anaemia and other health issues. Vitamin B12 tests are used as a diagnostic tool to identify the causes of anaemia and help detect any deficiencies early, ensuring timely intervention and proper management of health conditions.

Vitamin B9 (Folic acid)

Folate or folic acid, or Vitamin B9, is essential for red blood cell formation, tissue and cellular repair, especially during pregnancy. It is naturally found in leafy green vegetables, yeast, and citrus fruits. Adequate folate levels are crucial for overall health, and a deficiency can lead to anaemia and other health issues. Folate tests help identify the causes of anaemia and ensure optimal folate levels, promoting better health and wellbeing. These tests are particularly important for monitoring health during pregnancy and preventing potential complications related to folate deficiency.

Who should consider vitamin blood test

Who should consider vitamin blood test?

A vitamin or mineral deficiency can lead to a range of symptoms, varying depending on what your body is lacking. These symptoms may include tiredness, fatigue, hair loss, body aches, and more. This test covers not only essential micronutrients but also many vitamins and minerals that are often overlooked. For instance, while iron is a well-known mineral that many people lack, causing fatigue, your tiredness might actually be due to a B vitamin deficiency. A complete vitamin and mineral test provides a more comprehensive analysis of your nutrient levels compared to a standard blood test. With your results, you can begin working towards restoring balance in your body, which may help alleviate the symptoms you are experiencing. The detailed report can also be shared with your GP or healthcare practitioner to support your health journey and assist in any diagnoses. This test gives you a clearer understanding of your nutrient status, helping you take informed steps toward better health and wellbeing.

FAQs

The vitamin and minerals blood test is not suitable to be performed at home through finger prick collection. This is due to the inclusion of trace minerals like zinc, which require a venous blood draw for accurate measurement. You can either arrange for a healthcare professional to perform the venous blood draw or visit one of our partner clinics. Alternatively, we can arrange for a nurse to visit you at home or work to collect your blood sample, if preferred.

This test requires a venous blood draw, which may not be suitable for children. Specifically, our partner clinics cannot collect blood from individuals under 18 years of age.

It is recommended to fast for at least 8 hours before your vitamin test, as iron levels can be affected. However, you may drink water and should stay well hydrated.
